Sumi-e Paintings

Sumi painting uses only black ink, although sometimes, some colour may be used.  Whether in black ink only or otherwise, this Japanese style of painting uses simple strokes.  Only what is necessary is painted.

A self-taught student of Japanese Sumi-e paintings, I find this style of painting similar to meditation.  You have to be at peace when you paint, aware of your breathing - deep and slow, your movements - graceful. I have been exploring this style of painting for the past 20 years.

Early 2004, I had the privilege to study Chinese Brush painting with Mr. Bao Qing Meng who owns the Bao Wen Gallery in Markham, Ontario.  He is a very patient teacher and talented artist.

A very summery painting, the colour of the rose is vibrant red, with touches of pink.  This symbolises yang energy, and can represent the FIRE element.
