Marissa Sweet - Artist Statement

The placement of colour in a given space has power.  Its influence on one’s environment is profound and elemental. By composing scenes that situate colourful, abstracted organic forms within natural and urban settings, I invite viewers to reflect upon their relationship to their surroundings.

The inclusion of personal symbols, Japanese characters and Chinese calligraphy honors my heritage and reveals my cultural influences.  My study of the principles of Feng Shui also provides guidance and inspiration to my paintings.

My enthusiasm for painting and vibrant colour compels me to vigorously manipulate the paint surface.  My painting process includes the application of surface textures, scratching and scraping into paint and glazing colour layers in an intuitive manner.

To me, a work is successful when it retains the spontaneous impulse that drove the piece from the start.  The painting will then sing to the viewer with a voice of full life.
